Awesome stainless tiles Oct 22, 2009

Over the past 1 & 1/2 years I've been working on remodeling my kitchen. It's been a long project but well worth the wait. So after spending major bucks on cabinets, slate floor, wood trim and granite countertops, why skimp on the backsplash? We had looked at tiles at all the "big box" home improvement stores, and their selection was very slim. A coworker recommended an online tile store and their selection was incredible. After much thought, a few samples later and lots of mulling, we decided to go with glass and stainless mix. Turns out, the stainless tile was on backorder for 3-4 weeks. On a whim I looked on Amazon and found an item almost identical to this other online site.
So without further ado, I emailed to find a price quote on shipping. Surprisingly, the actual shipping was half of what Amazon was going to charge me for 28 tiles, plus these were less expensive than this other online store. I placed the order and got them 3 or 4 days later. Even with paying for shipping, it still was cheaper than the "free delivery" from the other site. So seriously, check out the shipping because the shipping "cost" Amazon has listed is not even close.
I give Builder's Depot Direct 5 stars for very quick email response for shipping quotes and shipping time. They arrived well packed and undamaged, despite the delivery man's careless handling. I am definitely keeping this company in mind for future purchases. We were very satisfied with the service and product.
As for the product...I felt it deserved 4 stars instead of 5 because of how they are put together. The tiles are cupped stainless mounted on ceramic, on a sheet of mesh. The problem is the adhesive does not coat the entire inside of the tile. Hence, cutting around outlets, etc, can leave you with a short piece on the end, and many times that tends to come off the ceramic. Some glue, grout, or thinset fixes that, but it is a hassle. That is why it gets 4 stars instead of 5. You also must file the sharp edges off after cutting, and unfortunately there doesn't appear to be any "end" tiles available for exposed edges. I suggest filing the edges off and flipping the tile around; grout will mostly cover the cut edge and exposed end will look finished.
The tiles are up now and look amazing. There are 5 rows of stainless, a row of black/blue irridescent glass, 2 rows of stainless, another row of glass, and topped off with 5 more rows of stainless. They really set off the "blue starlight" granite and work well with the undercabinet halogens. And the best part is that the stainless seems to be a classy, timeless choice that will look good for years and years.
